Work has commenced on the Diamond Valley Library outdoor rejuvenation project, designed to allow the library to expand its services outdoors.

The library will remain open to the public throughout the works, with a temporary alternate entry during the first stage at the front of the building. This will see improvements to accessibility at the library entrance with upgrading of the entry path and the two upgraded accessible parking bays.

During the second stage of works, the outdoor garden area will be closed, while the area is landscaped and a new play area, vegetable boxes, seating and a communication board is installed.

Nillumbik Mayor Ben Ramcharan said the aim of the rejuvenation work is to allow for more outdoor learning and activities and ensure equity of access and inclusion of the library’s programs.

“The revitalised space will enable a wide range of outdoor learning opportunities and activities focused on nature, health and wellbeing,” Cr Ramcharan said. “From gardening workshops to nature play, the library will serve as a hub for outdoor education and play.”

Yarra Plenty Regional Library CEO Jane Cowell said that the garden is a unique space that is much loved by the local community. “These works will modernise a much loved library space, ensuring that it is available as a community space to learn, grow, and play.”

Diamond Valley Library is the only public library in Australia to be a Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden partner. These works will provide better facilities for the programs run as part of this initiative.

The Library underwent a major refresh in 2022, transforming the library into a modern, inviting space for the community.

Work is funded via $438,243 from the State Government Growing Suburbs Fund, and is expected to be complete in September this year. The library is situated at Civic Drive in Greensborough.
