Camden Council is taking a strong stance against illegal dumping, with new surveillance cameras now installed at known dumping hotspots across Leppington.
Funded through the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Illegal Dumping Prevention Program, the cameras are in operation 24/7 and are located at Ingleburn Road, Park Road and the corner of Anthony and Alma Roads in Leppington.
Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said illegal dumping continued to place an unfair burden on residents and the environment and Council was committed to holding offenders accountable.
“Illegal dumping is not a harmless act. It damages our environment, creates an eyesore in our community and can be difficult and costly to clean up,” she said.
“These cameras send a clear message – if you’re dumping waste illegally in Camden, we’ll catch you. We just don’t stand for this type of behaviour here.
“There is always a right way to dispose of your waste and there’re no excuse for taking shortcuts that impact your neighbours and our local environment.”
Illegal dumping is the disposal of waste on land or into waterways and can include anything from household items and green waste to building materials, soil and asbestos.
Council also continues to work closely with the Western Sydney Regional Illegal Dumping (RID) Squad to investigate all reports of illegal dumping on public and private land.
Investigations may include gathering surveillance footage, obtaining witness statements and collecting evidence to identify offenders. Fines may apply where illegal dumping is detected.
Residents who notice illegal dumping are encouraged to report it by contacting Council on 13 22 63, reporting online through Council’s website at camden.nsw.gov.au/contact-us/report, or through the NSW EPA’s RID website at ridonline.epa.nsw.gov.au
