IATA Turbulence Aware Coverage Of Latin America Boosted

IATA

Mexico City – The International Air Transport Association’s (IATA’s) Turbulence Aware coverage of Latin America has been significantly boosted as Aeromexico becomes the latest airline to join the program.

The inclusion of Aeromexico brings coverage of turbulence incidents across Latin America to more than 3,200 flight per day—a 25% increase compared with 2024. Aeromexico’s reporting includes data from across its 90 Boeing aircraft fleet, supported by Boeing’s complementary capability that enables real‑time weather and turbulence observations.

IATA’s Turbulence Aware collates anonymized turbulence reports from flights operated by more than 30 participating airlines worldwide. This aggregated data is then shared almost instantaneously with airlines, providing pilots with a near real-time view of turbulence ahead of their aircraft. This equips pilots with the information needed to take mitigating action, whether suspending meal service, turning on the seatbelt sign, or rerouting the flight where possible.

“Timely turbulence data helps airlines improve safety and passenger comfort. Each new airline joining Turbulence Aware makes its coverage more comprehensive, helping all participants. Aeromexico’s participation is particularly significant as it is the first major carrier from the Latin American region to join. We look forward to others from the region further strengthening the offering by following Aeromexico’s lead,” said Peter Cerda, IATA’s Regional Vice President of the Americas.

“We are pleased to join IATA’s Turbulence Aware program and leverage our extensive network and fleet to support the industry in managing turbulence more effectively. With accurate, real‑time data, pilots can better navigate turbulence, resulting in smoother journeys for our passengers,” said Cuitlahuac Gutierrez, SVP, Institutional Relations, Government, Airports and Industry Affairs at Aeromexico.
