Toowoomba-based construction company Northbuild has been awarded the tender to refurbish the city’s much-loved State Heritage-listed Soldiers’ Memorial Hall.
Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) Environment and Community Committee Chair Cr James O’Shea said upgrading the building had been a goal of Council for a long time.
“The Soldiers’ Memorial Hall has been part of the Toowoomba landscape for almost a century and these works will bring it into the modern day and ensure it takes pride of place on the corner of Ruthven and Herries Streets for years to come,” he said.
“This building is an important monument to our fallen service men and women and a place of support for current and ex-service personnel.”
Cr O’Shea said construction is expected to start in late November.
“The project includes demolishing partition walls, most of which aren’t part of the original feature; reconstructing new spaces within the building to reconfigure the layout for modern day use along with renovating and restoring areas of the original hall,” he said.
“It will provide modern office, meeting room and function spaces, new compliant People with Disability (PWD) amenities, new kitchen facilities and internal lift access.
“I’m pleased to say that the project will create local jobs during construction and help revitalise our CBD”.
Construction is expected to be completed in late June 2022, weather and supply chains permitting.
The upgrade of the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall is jointly funded by the Australian Government through its Building Better Regions Fund and TRC.
