Charges laid after woman seriously injured during bag snatch in Berkeley

Two people have been charged after a woman was seriously injured during a bag snatch in Berkeley last year.

Just before 10am on Sunday 26 August 2018, a 62-year-old woman and her son were sitting in a car in the public carpark of a temple at Berkley.

It is alleged another woman approached the open passenger door and grabbed hold of her bag.

As the woman attempted to hold onto her bag, she was dragged to a nearby car, where a man was waiting in the driver’s seat.

The car drove off, pulling the woman for a short distance before she fell and hit her head.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District attended and established a crime scene.

The woman was taken to Wollongong Hospital, before being transferred to Royal North Shore Hospital with serious head injuries. She has since been released, however as a result of the incident she is suffering permanent physical injuries.

Today (Wednesday 23 January 2019), a 34-year-old woman was arrested outside Wollongong Local Courthouse.

She was taken to Wollongong Police Station and charged with robbery in company cause wounding/grievous bodily harm.

She was refused bail and appeared at Wollongong Local Court today, where conditional bail was granted. The woman is due to re-appear in the same court on 3 April 2019.

A 35-year-old Wollongong man was also issued with a Future Court Attendance Notice for the same offence to appear at Wollongong Local Court on 5 April 2019.
