Man charged after police officer allegedly stabbed – Sydney CBD

A man will appear in court today charged after a police officer was allegedly stabbed in Sydney’s CBD.

Yesterday (Sunday 19 May 2024), two officers were conducting traffic duties at the intersection of Castlereagh and Park Streets, when a male constable was approached from behind by a man shortly after 1pm, who allegedly produced a knife and stabbed the officer in the head.

The man fled and was pursued by the injured officer and a female constable along Park Street and into Hyde Park, with officers directing the man to drop the knife.

The officers confronted the man in the park, still armed with a knife before further officers attended to assist and he was tasered.

Constable Elvis Poa – aged 35 and attached to Kings Cross Police Area Command – was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for two wounds to his head. He was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital, where scans have since revealed he suffered two skull fractures and remains in a stable condition.

The 34-year-old man was arrested and taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital under police guard, for assessment.

Crime scenes were established at the intersection of Castlereagh and Park Streets and Elizabeth Street, near Bathurst Street. They have since been forensically examined.

Detectives commenced an investigation into the incident under Strike Force Dills.

Upon being released from hospital, the man was taken to Day Street Police Station and charged with cause wounding/grievous bodily harm to person with intent to murder.

He was refused bail to appear before Downing Centre Local Court today (Monday 20 May 2024).
