Council has secured a Victorian Government grant of $91,575 to upgrade and expand lighting at the Warrnambool Lawn Tennis Club courts.
The funding was officially announced on Friday at Lake Pertobe by member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora, who said it was great to see an upgrade that would create more access to the courts for more people.
Ms Ermacora said the use of LED lighting to replace ageing halide lighting would also require less energy and be more environmentally sustainable.
Tennis Club president Kim Tobin said in addition to an upgrade of existing lights at six tennis courts, new lighting would be installed at two Plexipave courts. All eight courts are available for year-round use while the club’s 26 grass courts are used predominantly over summer.
Ms Tobin said the club was making the courts available for pickleball and the Plexipave courts were also accessible to wheelchair players.
Cr Angie Paspaliaris thanked Ms Ermacora and the Victorian Government for the grant and said the lighting upgrade would see the courts illuminated to competition standard.
Cr Paspaliaris said the investment in sporting infrastructure aligned with Council’s Health and Wellbeing Plan which aimed to enable people to be more active.
She also acknowledged the club’s volunteers who organise regular tennis competitions along with tournaments that attract thousands of people to Warrnambool.
The total value of the lighting project is $122,100, with contributions coming from Council and the Club.
The tennis club will manage delivery of the project in partnership with Council.
