traP’s coding class attracts 22 middle and high school students in spring 2024

Digital Creators Club traP, an official Tokyo Tech Student Club, organized another coding class for middle and high school students on Ookayama Campus on March 30. This was the fifteenth time the student club guided youngsters through the workshop.

Support was again provided by Supporterz Inc., a Tokyo-based recruitment and event planning company, which helped with lunch and other expenses.

Twenty-two middle and high school students participated in this class, aiming to complete a browser-based invader game with the support of traP members. Using original instructional material created by traP and the JavaScript programming language, the students implemented functions to move the player, fire bullets, and execute other actions in the game.

After a total of six hours of programming, all participants were able to complete the basic part of the game. Some participants also worked on more advanced functions such as creating sounds for their game.

In the post-event survey, over 80 percent of respondents said they felt very satisfied. Some commented that the instructors’ approaches were friendly and easy to understand. Others said they felt a true sense of accomplishment after the class.

Comments from programming class moderator

Yusuke Kondo

2nd year, Computer Science

I am learning about a wide range of topics in the Department of Computer Science at Tokyo Tech. I also learned programming at traP after I entered Tokyo Tech. The environment is always crucial when trying to earn anything, not just programming. I can say that I would never have become as proficient in coding as I am now without the excellent environment at traP.

At this event, we aimed to create an environment where participants can dive into the world of programming while having fun through the creation of invader games. We hope that the participants can use what they picked up in this class in the future.
