- Cook Labor Government transfers land to the Dogs’ Refuge Home, securing their future at their Shenton Park location.
- Land transferred for $1 under the condition it is used to continue to support the welfare of dogs.
- Since 1935, Shenton Park Dogs’ Refuge Home has cared for and rehomed dogs.
The Cook Labor Government is securing the future of one of the State’s most respected animal welfare organisations, with the transfer of land at 30 Lemnos Street, Shenton Park to not-for-profit Dogs’ Refuge Home WA Inc.
In recognition of the immense community benefit, and the longstanding history of the Dogs’ Refuge Home at its current site, a nominal fee of $1 was charged for the conditional freehold land transfer.
The transfer occurred under the condition that the land is used to advance the welfare of dogs and related activities, and for the continued commemoration of pets in their 80-year-old pet cemetery.
The land will be held in perpetuity by Dogs’ Refuge Home Pty Ltd, allowing them greater control over the site and the ability to plan and operate well into the future.
Since 1935, Dogs’ Refuge Home WA has provided care, shelter and rehoming services for lost, abandoned and vulnerable dogs from its Shenton Park location.
Comments attributed to Planning and Lands Minister John Carey:
“Each year, Dogs’ Refuge Home saves the lives of neglected and abandoned dogs by taking them in and finding them a new home.
“We are supporting Dogs’ Refuge Home continue to operate and provide more dogs a second chance at life through this conditional land transfer.
“Not only does this grant Dogs’ Refuge Home certainty over their future, but it gives our government another opportunity to recognise and support the more than 90 years of care and compassion they’ve shown to dogs and dog-owners.”
As stated by Dogs’ Refuge Home President Karen Rhodes:
“We are absolutely delighted to secure freehold land tenure in this our 90th year and so grateful to the State Government for recognising the important work we do and have done for so many years.
“Helping to have our future secured gives us additional peace of mind knowing how much we are needed as the never-ending number of dogs and puppies being abandoned sadly seems to be increasing every year.
“We celebrate this support together with the support we receive from our dog loving community each year which enables us to do the critical work we do.”
