The Coalition Government has committed $10 million to upgrade Freds Pass Sports and Recreation Reserve in Litchfield National Park in the Northern Territory.
Founded in 1976, the funding will update facilities to keep supporting more than 2,800 members for sporting and recreational facilities.
Freds Pass caters for a wide variety of sports, equestrian, recreational and even canine activities.
Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce said Freds Pass serves a population of around 60,000 people and the regional sporting facility was critical to the wellbeing of the community.
“Sport and recreational facilities can help increase both physical and mental health in communities, and are important for regional areas,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.
“This funding will enable Freds Pass to upgrade their facilities while keeping prices for their members affordable.
“The Coalition Government stands up for regional Australia and believes all Australians should have access to important services, regardless of whether they live outside a capital city.”
Federal Country Liberal Party candidate for Lingiari Damien Ryan welcome the funding announcement.
“Freds Pass is the region’s largest sporting precinct, and this much-needed upgrade will ensure it continues to service the Darwin sporting community and also the rural show, which is held annually on the grounds,” Mr Ryan said.
“Together with my colleague, Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, we welcome this sizeable commitment from the Coalition Government, and we would like to thank the Deputy Prime Minister for securing this funding for what is an important piece of community and sporting infrastructure for Freds Pass and the district.”
