Townsville City Council has nominated the preferred Contractor for the redevelopment of the Tobruk Memorial Baths on The Strand, which is expected to support over 120 jobs.
Local contractor Jackson + Semler won the contract and is expected to start work in early September.
Townsville Deputy Mayor Les Walker said awarding the construction tender to a local company helps ensure profits remain within the city.
“Jackson + Semler is a reputable company in the construction industry who have worked on some of Townsville’s biggest infrastructure projects recently like the Local Disaster Coordination Centre and the North Queensland Stadium,” Cr Walker said.
“Council is committed to investing ratepayer’s money back into the pockets of Townsville locals while delivering first-class infrastructure projects right across the city.
“This $11.3 million redevelopment is part of Council’s $409.1 million infrastructure spend and capital investment in the 2019/20 Budget, which is providing infrastructure that will build our city’s future.”
Local Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said she is excited to see the Tobruk Memorial Baths redevelopment progress.
“It is great to see works coming along to revamp this popular swimming area on The Strand,” Cr Greaney said.
“Now that Council has nominated a contractor, we will start to see some really great changes as the redevelopment takes shape.
“I want to thank all the pool users for their patience and understanding while we get these works done – it’ll be worth the wait when it’s all up and running again in late February.”
