2019 National Recycling Week is bigger than ever

National Recycling Week begins today with a series of events taking place across our city, encouraging people and business to do more to minimise waste and manage resources responsibly.

Minister for Recycling and Waste Reduction Chris Steel today encouraged all Canberrans to explore the huge range of events and activities taking place during National Recycling Week (11-17 November 2019).

“In the wake of changes to the global recycling industry, how we manage our waste is more important than ever,” Minister Steel said.

“National Recycling Week is a fantastic opportunity to showcase how we encourage recycling and reduce our waste in the ACT.

“Get involved and be inspired by stories of innovation, go behind the scenes at recycling facilities and find out what you can do to reduce, reuse and recycle,” said Minister Steel.

Throughout the week residents can:

  • visit the sustainable packaging exhibition in the Canberra Centre, (City Walk Entrance) and explore how products can be packaged in sustainable ways
  • book behind-the-scene tours at facilities such as the Recycling Discovery Hub, Soft Landing Mattress Recycling or find out what happens to the brewing leftovers at Capital Brewing Co
  • get tips from Thor’s Hammer craftspeople on working with recycled timber or take part in a composting workshop to learn more about managing your food waste.

The Design-out Waste exhibition in the Canberra Centre explores the impact of consumerism and showcases examples of sustainable packaging across the globe.

The exhibition’s centrepiece is the World of Waste sculpture, led by local artist Rachel Develin in collaboration with students from across the ACT. It is made from discarded materials and explores the impact of our waste.

GIVIT’s Mission Untossable event will be hosted by Andy Marks. Andy is the impact designer for ABC TV’s War on Waste and this event is sure to inspire as some of Canberra’s creative guru’s showcase how they give objects new life.

The 2019 National Recycling Week is being undertaken in partnership with DESIGN Canberra Festival. The DESIGN Canberra festival theme is ‘Utopia’ which highlights design as a powerful tool to build a better world and imagine a perfect future.
