2020 SA Domestic & Family Violence Vigil

Embolden

The 2020 Domestic and Family Violence Vigil will be a Virtual Event this Year

with a focus on Aboriginal Family Violence Against Women and Children

The first Wednesday in May is a national day the Women’s Family and Domestic Violence sector stands with families and communities that have lost a loved one to domestic violence.

This year, in South Australia, we especially honour the memories of Aboriginal Women and Children whose lives have been lost due to domestic and Aboriginal family violence.

Aboriginal women are 3 times more likely to experience violence than non-Aboriginal women. While it is the responsibility of all of us to end violence against Aboriginal women and their children, the systems that are in place are failing.

We will also recognise the death of Kim Murphy, the first South Australian woman to die due to domestic violence this year.

Due to COVID-19 South Australians are being asked to connect socially via Facebook live tonight from 5:30pm, to light a candle and hold a moment of silence. They are invited to share photos of their candles with the hashtags #VigilSA and #StandByUs.

The Domestic and Family Violence Vigil is a national event that has been held for almost 20 years.
