2022 Seniors Month

Darwin City Council

City of Darwin has developed a program of events certain to keep older residents on the go this Seniors Month.

Seniors Month in the Territory is held in August each year and City of Darwin has prepared more than 20 diverse events for the month.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said seniors were an important and growing part of Darwin’s demographic and their contribution needed to be acknowledged.

“Past generations of Darwin seniors packed up and left once they reached retirement age. That’s no longer the case and we are a better and stronger community because of the growing number of seniors who continue to call Darwin home,” Mr Vatskalis said.

“I think it’s entirely appropriate we recognise what seniors have given to Darwin during their lives and how they continue to enrich our community today.”

Mr Vatskalis said the month’s program included a variety of activities, offering something that will spark interest for all senior residents.

Events/presentations include a Conversation with Robyne Burridge – 2022 NT Senior Australian of the Year, a Larrakia Cultural Awareness Presentation, computer education sessions and a Grandparents and Grandchildren Morning Tea.

“There’s even a drumming workshop, which I reckon would have real physical and mental benefits,” Mr Vatskalis said.

Also included on the program was a 1.5 hour hidden secrets of Darwin walk, dreamcatcher and beading workshops, as well as line dancing.

Seniors will also have the chance to learn about the symbols, tools and secrets of Aboriginal rock art in a workshop for those seeking inspiration from the world’s oldest surviving culture.
