21 charged after Kariong riot, NSW

Police have charged five adults and 16 juveniles with riot after a two-day public order incident on the Central Coast.

About 8pm on Saturday 20 July 2019, Northern Region officers responded to a riot within a juvenile justice centre.

Just before 5.30pm yesterday (Monday 22 July 2019), operatives from the Tactical Operations Unit and the Public Order and Riot Squad gained access to the roof of the facility, where the remaining detainees surrendered peacefully.

Local detectives established Strike Force Mittabah to investigate the incident and have charged five adults and 16 youths with riot.

Four adults – a 19-year-old and three 18-year-olds – will appear today (Tuesday 23 July 2019) at Gosford Local Court. Another 19-year-old appeared in Gosford Local Court yesterday.

The youths will appear at Woy Woy Children’s Court today.

Youth Justice NSW will continue to lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the disturbance.

Three men continue to receive medical treatment at Gosford Hospital; one man suffered stab wounds and a collapsed lung, another suffered head and facial injuries, and the third man suffered a fractured ankle.
