One of Western Australia’s largest Scout Groups will be getting a new home thanks to a $3 million grant announced today by Youth Minister Dave Kelly and Wanneroo MLA Sabine Winton.
The funding will enable the construction of a new, community hall facility in Tapping, and delivers on an election commitment made by the McGowan Government in March 2021.
The Carramar Scout Group will be one of the major beneficiaries of the hall, which will also be available for use of other local community groups.
The Carramar Scout Group, which formed in late 2014, has not had a permanent place to gather, store equipment or conduct activities in that time. This has resulted in significant costs for the group, who deliver activities for over 100 young people in the northern suburbs.
An in-principle agreement was entered into in 2018 between the Scout Association and the City of Wanneroo to develop a vacant block of land on Ashley Road, Tapping.
Delivering on this election commitment will enable the land to be developed and an important new community facility constructed.
The Scout Program builds youth leadership, provides recognition of participation and achievement and offers volunteering opportunities and personal development through fun, engaging, physically challenging and mentally stimulating activities for young persons aged between five and 26.
As stated by Youth Minister Dave Kelly:
“The new Community Scout Hall will enable the growth of the group and allow more youth and leaders to share the benefits scouting brings.
“The Scout movement in Western Australia has for decades been integral in enabling children and young people to grow and develop into adults ready to take their place as local and global citizens.
“The popularity of Scouting in the northern suburbs of Perth is certain to grow in years to come, and Scouts WA will be well equipped to meet that demand.”
As stated by Wanneroo MLA Sabine Winton:
“Carramar Scouts are a fantastic group who had long been telling me that they needed a new permanent home.
“They do incredible work with our young people and this investment will allow them to shine, grow and build an even more impressive program of activities and training for our young people.
“The new hall will not only be an important place where local young people and youth leaders in the scout movement can meet and display their work, but also for other community groups to use for meetings and events.
“I’m really pleased to be able to deliver on this important election commitment for the local community.”
