Using electric vehicles to strengthen the grid, and helping apartment residents share solar and battery power, are among 14 innovative projects backed by $30 million in Albanese Labor Government funding for a smarter, more efficient energy system.
The Grid Enhancing Technologies (GET) Grant Program will provide $30 million in competitive grants for 14 innovative projects which will strengthen Australia’s energy grid.
These grants are part of the Albanese Government’s Rewiring the Nation program, investing more than $20 billion to modernise and expand Australia’s electricity system for a cheaper, cleaner and more reliable energy future.
The 14 projects receiving funding will support technologies that boost capacity and improve performance across electricity networks in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory.
These projects will deploy a diverse range of solutions, including:
- Using EVs as batteries to help power homes and support the grid when electricity demand is high
- Giving EV owners incentives to charge when electricity is cheaper and more readily available
- Helping renewable energy developers quickly find the best places to connect new energy projects to the grid
- Giving grid operators better tools to move electricity around the network and safely increase its capacity
- Technology that keeps the grid stable during high solar generation so more power can be used safely
- Coordinating large scale batteries across the network to reduce pressure on the grid.
Together, these projects will unlock more renewable energy flowing through the grid faster, allowing households and businesses to get more value from rooftop solar and batteries.
Successful applicants under the GET program were required to show how their project could work across the broader energy network to benefit more Australian households and businesses in the future.
