The oldest of current Government schools operating in Katherine, Katherine South Primary School began operating in September 1976.
Initially operating under the Commonwealth Government, on the 1st of July 1978, responsibility for the school transferred to the Northern Territory Government following the move to Northern Territory self-government in 1978.
Like the rest of Katherine, the school was heavily damaged in the 1998 floods but bounced back as an even better school after the repairs.
In 2026, Katherine South Primary School is a valued part of the community with around 200 enrolled students, built on 50 years of relationships, family connections, and commitment to students centred on strong relationships, explicit teaching and high expectations.
Minister for Education and Training, and Member for Katherine, Jo Hersey, said the Katherine South Primary School roots run deep within the community.
“Katherine South Primary School has been a cornerstone of our community for 50 years,” Minister Hersey said.
“From the schools’ humble beginnings at the showground demountables in 1976 to the school it is today, this milestone reflects the dedication of many long-term Katherine locals and school staff who supported the school.
“Congratulations on a wonderful 50 years.”
Principal of Katherine South Primary School, Chris Errington, said: “Our focus is on continuing to build a positive school culture and strong community connections, grounded in trust, wellbeing and a genuine love of learning.”
“As we look to the next 50 years, we will strive to increase our enrolments, and to continue building a school where every child is encouraged to embrace challenges and develop the confidence to pursue their potential. As always, we’ll stay true to our long-held motto: ‘Be your best at KSPS.”
The Katherine community is invited to join the celebrations from 10am to 2pm today at Katherine South Primary School.
The celebrations will feature family activities, historical displays, a ball drop, helicopter rides and food trucks.
