Federal Minister for Emergency Management David Littleproud, and the Tasmanian Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management Mark Shelton today welcomed the new Natural Disaster Risk Reduction Grants Program (NDRRGP) which will support Tasmanian communities to implement the National Disaster Risk Reduction Framework.
The five year agreement will deliver $5.22 million of Commonwealth funding to Tasmania, with successful applicants required to match the funding with cash or in-kind contributions.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction Framework is a result of engagement with government, industry and community sector organisations which aims to ensure communities are equipped with information to respond to a natural hazard. Minister for Emergency Management David Littleproud said the funding will support Tasmanian communities to reduce the risk and limit the impact of floods, bushfires and other natural hazards.
“Reducing disaster risk and building resilience is not something the government can do alone – we need everyone in the community to get involved. This is why we work with all levels of government, business, not-for-profits and community groups to reduce disaster risk.
We’ll never be able eradicate disasters, but by working together we can ensure we take action to address the causes of disaster risk, strengthen resilience and enable communities to adapt and recover from such events,” Minister Littleproud said.
Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Mangement Mark Shelton said the funding will be used to support disaster risk reduction activities aligned to the National Disaster Risk Reduction Framework and Tasmanian Disaster Resilience Strategy 2020-2025.
“While we cannot always prevent natural disasters, we can do a lot to reduce risk and build resilience to make the community safer” Minister Shelton said.
First round applications will close on Sunday 23 August 2020. Organisations eligible to apply for funding under the NDRRGP are:
- Councils;
- State Government agencies;
- Not-for-profit organisations with emergency management responsibilities; and
- Universities and other research institutions.
