86 dogs seized from convicted puppy farmer in Lewiston

RSPCA South Australia’s Inspectorate Team executed a warrant and seized 86 dogs at a commercial puppy breeding farm on a property in Lewiston yesterday.

Acting on information received from the public, RSPCA inspectors attended the property just after 9:30am yesterday with assistance from SAPOL and seized the dogs, as well as three rabbits and two guinea pigs.

It is RSPCA’s understanding that the property is owned by Kerrie Fitzpatrick, a previous offender. Fitzpatrick was found guilty of 16 animal cruelty offences in August of this year and is currently prohibited from having custody of more than two pet dogs, four rabbits and seven budgerigars.

Speaking about the seizure, RSPCA South Australia’s Chief Inspector Andrew Baker confirmed that the organisation will be reviewing the evidence, including documents and electronic evidence seized yesterday, to determine if charges will be laid.

“Ms Fitzpatrick has been on our radar for some time, and this is an example of RSPCA South Australia performing its duty of care and actively enforcing prohibition orders,” said Mr Baker.

“Ms Fitzpatrick was on the premises yesterday and we will be alleging that she is the sole owner of the property and that the dogs were in her custody, which puts her in breach of her court order.”

Following the full-day field operation, the animals were assessed at RSPCA’s Lonsdale shelter. Among the various dog breeds seized were border collies and a number of cross breed dogs.

Charges have not yet been laid while the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information that could assist with this investigation is asked to contact RSPCA South Australia on 1300 477 722.

Given the large volume of dogs seized as part of this operation, RSPCA’s Lonsdale shelter is yet again overcapacity and future intake restrictions may apply.

RSPCA reminds people wishing to buy a puppy to ensure that they are dealing with reputable breeders who comply with South Australia’s dog breeding standards.
