A city ready to shine – a bold and ambitious vision for Sunshine

Brimbank Council has endorsed the Sunshine Priority Precinct Vision 2050 to transform the working class area into a 21st century city through leveraging the Melbourne Airport Rail and other mega infrastructure investment.

When the airport rail was announced in 2017 Premier Andrews stated “this sort of investment needs to be done right. It needs to be done properly and it needs to benefit every single Victorian.”

Council has undertaken extensive engagement and created a clear vision for the precinct so these benefits can be realised fully in Sunshine and the western region.

To achieve the vision the Melbourne Airport Rail mustn’t just funnel tourists and business people between the airport and other centres.

The Sunshine Priority Precinct Vision 2050 highlights the central role Sunshine has to play in the growth and prosperity of Melbourne’s West.

Sunshine is geographically located in the centre of Melbourne’s west. It has the land, linkages to the airport, port, Melbourne CBD and regional Victoria to make it a hub for the local visitor economy and a key spoke to connect the western region.

The vision outlines a plan to help unlock up to $8 billion of investment and development potential and create between 20,000 and 50,000 new jobs across the precinct over the next 30 years.

The vision has gained wide-ranging support from community, government departments and industry bodies including the Western of Melbourne Economic Development Alliance who called it a “ground-breaking proposal and very exciting for Brimbank and Melbourne’s west.”

Central to the vision is the Sunshine CBD becoming a key visitor destination thanks to the development of an integrated Sunshine Station Super Hub.

To achieve the vision the Melbourne Airport Rail mustn’t just funnel tourists and business people between the airport and other centres.

The bold and ambitious vision was unanimously endorsed by the 10 councillors in attendance.

Council hopes that the vision will be used by all stakeholders, including the State and Federal governments to guide all future investment and development planning for the Sunshine Priority Precinct.
