A festival to motivate Brimbank to ‘Be Active’

The first annual Be Active Brimbank Festival will run from 19 to 26 October 2019 with a week of no charge come and try activities to encourage the community to get active.

The festival kicks off with the Be Active Family Day on Saturday 19 October with an Active Kids Circuit, group exercise classes, face painting, entertainment, a barbecue and more.

Mayor of Brimbank, Cr Lucinda Congreve said the Be Active Brimbank Festival is all about motivating the community to get active and showcasing ways to be active locally throughout the year.

“There are so many opportunities to be active in Brimbank that don’t involve a membership, joining a sports team, an ongoing commitment, or wearing Lycra.

“Things like taking a walk at lunchtime, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or stopping by the park on the weekend are all simple ways to be active.

“There are also a heap of affordable programs and activities run locally – many at Council facilities – where you can get moving and have fun in the process.

“As part of the Be Active Brimbank Festival we’ve put together a week of come and try activities to help community members discover ways to get active at our neighbourhood houses, leisure centres, parks, skate parks, community halls, and even at local schools.

“But we don’t want it to end with the festival.

“The Be Active Brimbank Festival is the launch of an ongoing Council initiative to encourage the community be ‘Be Active’ every day.

“Many of the classes and programs showcased in the festival are running all the time – and there are many more to choose from.

“Many Council facilities run programs including gentle exercise, walking groups, yoga, Zumba, dance, children’s sport, and heaps more where you’ll be welcomed no matter your fitness level, ability or cultural background.

“Plus, our walking and cycling paths, parks, playgrounds and open spaces are open 24/7 – and they don’t cost a thing,” Cr Congreve said.

The Be Active Family Day will be held on Saturday 19 October, 11am-2pm at Sunshine Square, 301A Hampshire Road, Sunshine (next to Brimbank Community and Civic Centre), at no charge.
