The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) community is deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Tung Chee-hwa, the first Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and former Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, at the age of 89. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family.
Throughout his life, Mr. Tung was devoted to the nation and to Hong Kong. He led Hong Kong through its return to the Motherland and was a steadfast practitioner of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle, as well as a key architect of Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability. Firmly believing that the Motherland is Hong Kong’s strongest support, he demonstrated remarkable vision in charting the city’s development. His patriotism, dedication to Hong Kong, and strong sense of responsibility will forever serve as an inspiration to future generations.
Mr. Tung consistently attached great importance to the advancement of higher education and the cultivation of scientific and technological talent in Hong Kong. A steadfast champion of university development, research excellence, and innovation, he strongly advocated strengthening Hong Kong through education, technology, and talent development. His unwavering support for young people in pursuing scientific advancement and serving society and the nation left a lasting impact on Hong Kong’s education and innovation landscape. Throughout the years, Mr. Tung also extended invaluable support and encouragement to HKUST’s growth and development. His generosity, pragmatism, and visionary leadership will continue to inspire the HKUST community for generations to come.
May Mr. Tung Chee-hwa rest in peace. His contributions will be long remembered, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
