Abai update: clean bill of health

Kempsey Shire Council

The Kempsey community has been following the progress of koala joey, Kempsey Abai after her mother was killed by a vehicle on Crescent Head Road in August 2023.

Abai remains in home care with volunteer foster carer Sue. Now settled into care, Abai’s cheeky personality is shining as she tests out her strength and skills – hanging by one arm, swinging, and jumping between branches.

Abai recently visited the Koala Hospital for a health assessment. She received a clean bill of health as well as some new bling!

As Abai continues to grow strong and receives the all-clear from future health check tests, the plan is for her to be released back to the wild.

We are in koala breeding season which runs from August through February. You’ll notice koalas are more active and may frequently cross roads or venture into our towns.

Pay extra attention to the roads, especially during dusk and dawn, when koalas are most active.

Slow down and drive carefully, especially at night, to avoid any unfortunate accidents.

If you do some across a koala in need, please phone the Koala Emergency Rescue Line on 02 6584 1522, run by the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital.
