Active Living starts in suburbs

Participants enjoy zumba at the Cairns Esplanade Active Living class

BURNING off the Easter calories will be a lot easier when Council’s Active Living program starts in the suburbs on Monday (April 22).

The 12-week trial will bring three classes a week to public spaces in Edmonton, Trinity Beach, Yorkeys Knob and Mooroobool.

The suburban program builds on the highly successful Active Living program (formerly Fun Free Fitness) that has been held on the Esplanade for 16 years.

Provided with assistance from the North Queensland Sports Foundation (NQSF) and the North Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) the suburban program will give residents the chance to get out and active to improve their health, close to home.

Division 8 Councillor and NQSF chair Jessie Richardson said taking part in a class was just as much about being social as it was getting fit.

“It doesn’t matter your age, gender, body shape or how coordinated you are,” Cr Richardson said. “These classes are all about providing a safe, welcoming and non-judgemental environment where people can just ‘give it a go’.

“There’s no financial commitment, no need to splash cash on expensive outfits or equipment, or be embarrassed about not knowing the moves.

“It’s the perfect chance to start a healthier lifestyle or recommit to those New Year’s Eve resolutions.

“Whether you become an exercise junkie or not, the chance to meet new people and chat to your neighbours is worth the effort in itself.”

The trial continues to mid-July. If successful, Council will investigate rolling out classes in other neighbourhoods.
