Affordable apartments will complement Bayswater METRONET

  • Foyle Road apartments tailor-made for Bayswater homes
  • 17-apartment development will support construction jobs and economy
  • Nearby Bayswater Station upgrade underway in late 2019
  • Construction has begun on a high-quality, affordable apartment development that is aligned to the McGowan Government’s METRONET scheme and will meet Bayswater’s demand for diverse, well-located housing.

The five-storey development, a 17-apartment complex with a basement car park, built at 1 Foyle Road in Bayswater will create accessible housing with appropriate density close to public transport.

Western Australia’s changing population has seen rising demand for apartments, townhouses and terrace housing. The McGowan Government is addressing this need through the principle of thoughtful density in the right forms and in the right locations.

In July 2018, the Department of Communities received an Affordable Housing proposal from JCM Construction Pty Ltd (JCM) to acquire and develop the Foyle Road site.

The department acquired the land and JCM will construct a multi-unit complex comprised of one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments. Two properties will be retained for public housing, with the remainder for sale at market value.

Seven apartments will be built to Silver Level liveable housing design guidelines, with all units and communal areas accessible via a lift. Residents will enjoy a versatile rooftop terrace and landscaped gardens, as well as private outdoor living spaces and balconies.

Foyle Road is located within walking distance of a wide range of retail, commercial, medical and education amenities in the heart of Bayswater. Construction of the development is expected to be completed in late 2020.

As stated by Housing Minister Peter Tinley:

“Foyle Road is one of several projects announced under the McGowan Government’s METRONET Social and Affordable Housing and Jobs Package that offer people of diverse incomes and backgrounds a place to call home.

“These apartments enable people to live in their preferred locations, to stay connected to family and to be close to facilities and amenities that encourage them to actively participate in, and contribute to their communities.

“The Foyle Road development will provide a much-needed boost to housing diversity in Bayswater.

“It will suit a range of buyers including singles, couples, and two to three-person households, as well as those looking for apartments with a lift and universal access such as downsizers, ageing residents and people with mobility issues.”

As stated by Planning Minister Rita Saffioti:

“More housing close to train stations is a key policy of this Government.

“Located a few hundred metres from Bayswater Station, residents in this building will have excellent access to buses, trains and the Bayswater town centre.

“The upgrade of Bayswater Station starts later this year, creating a vibrant community and junction for the future Forrestfield-Airport Link, Morley-Ellenbrook Line and existing Midland Line.

“Future residents will have access to major employment hubs including the Bayswater and Kewdale industrial areas, Perth CBD, Perth Airport, and the Morley and Belmont activity centres – all within eight kilometres of the site.”

As stated by Maylands MLA Lisa Baker:

“Affordable housing is absolutely critical in keeping diversity in the Bayswater community.

“I welcome this development into the mix, keeping in mind affordability and also quality should go hand in hand.

“The apartments are located in the heart of Bayswater, within walking distance of Bayswater Station which is set to be transformed under METRONET.”
