Does your club or group want to be more inclusive of older people?
As part of the Seniors Festival for the month of October, we’re hosting two age-friendly forums discussing strategies for local groups and clubs to engage older people in activities and programs.
Author and television personality Tonia Todman will join the conversation along with local groups, including Kyneton U3A and Woodend Lifestyle Carers Group.
Former Gisborne and now Riddells Creek resident, Janet Wood is co-ordinator of Gisborne drop-in centre Muffin ‘n More, and says the forums will help community groups engage with older people.
“Joining a local group or club is a great way for people to connect with our lively communities, to make new friends, learn new skills or share ones they already have,” she said.
“It is important for these groups to think about how to be welcoming and inclusive of newcomers to the region or for those who are isolated. These forums will be especially helpful for organisers.”
The forums will be held from 10am to 12.30pm at Gisborne Uniting Church Hall on Monday 28 October, and from 10am to 12.30pm on Thursday 31 October at Woodend Neighbourhood House.
A new age-friendly community group directory and community group welcome checklist will be launched at the forums. These resources will help older people find out about the local activities and help groups and clubs work towards being more welcoming and inclusive of older people.
The Age-friendly Communities Project is funded by the Central Victorian Primary Care Partnership and aims to reducing social isolation in older people living in the Macedon Ranges.
