The rebuild for Altona Pier is one step closer with the tender for construction now released.
The community had a first look at the future Altona Pier through schematic designs released in May. Designed by Jackson Clements Burrows Architects, together with AW Maritime engineers and Site Office Landscape Architects, the design encapsulates features which the community championed during public consultation in 2020.
Featuring a heritage-look timber deck and y-shaped head, the pier will provide improved access for more of the community with the inclusion of an accessible lower landing.

“Altona Pier is a much-loved coastal destination in Melbourne’s West. The project to rebuild the pier will result in a wonderful facility to benefit the local community, as well as visitors, fishers and boaters” says Jo Richards, Regional Director Southern and Maritime, Parks Victoria. “Designed in conjunction with feedback from the community, the new pier will be safer, more accessible and provide a destination for the whole community to enjoy for decades to come.”
Altona Pier was built in the late 1800s with the most recent repair work carried out in the 1980s. Nearing the end of its service life, the pier is currently partially closed and earmarked for removal. As part of this process, timber from the old pier will be carefully salvaged for use, providing a vital connection to the past.
Complementing Hobsons Bay Council’s foreshore redevelopment, the project will revitalise the precinct and improve accessibility for the future. Works will be managed by Parks Victoria with funding committed by the Victorian Government under the $24 million Piers and Jetties Stimulus Packages. This contract is scheduled for award in late August, with works anticipated to begin in late 2022.
Tenders for the Altona Pier redevelopment are now open and close on 7 July 2022.
