The ACT Government has declared Sunday 25 April 2027 an additional public holiday.
This early notification will ensure workers can access public holiday entitlements on Anzac Day, while providing businesses and employers with as much notice as possible to plan for 2027.
In 2027, a public holiday will be observed in the ACT on both Anzac Day, Sunday 25 April 2027, and Monday 26 April 2027.
The declaration aligns with the approach previously adopted in the ACT when Anzac Day falls on a weekend, with a public holiday observed on the day itself and an additional public holiday on the following Monday.
The arrangements are also consistent with those already announced in New South Wales for 2027.
Minister for Skills, Training and Industrial Relations Michael Pettersson said public holiday arrangements have important implications for how people commemorate Anzac Day and for workers and employers across the Territory.
“Anzac Day is one of Australia’s most important national days of commemoration, providing an opportunity for Australians to reflect on and honour the service and sacrifice of those who have served our nation,” Minister Pettersson said.
“By confirming these arrangements well in advance, we are providing certainty for workers, businesses, community organisations and veterans as they prepare for 2027.
“Observing a public holiday on Anzac Day itself also ensures that workers who would ordinarily work on the Sunday can access the public holiday entitlements that apply on that day.”
Anzac Day arrangements from 2028
The ACT Government will engage with relevant stakeholders about options for a permanent legislative framework for future weekend Anzac Day public holiday arrangements from 2028 onwards.
Targeted stakeholder consultation will occur through late-August and September 2026.
“Stakeholder feedback will play an important role in helping the Government determine the most appropriate long-term arrangements for the ACT.
“We want to ensure any future approach appropriately recognises the significance of Anzac Day while taking into account social, commemorative, workforce and economic considerations.”
