ANZAC Day – Saturday, 25 April 2020

In light of there being no ANZAC Day ceremonies this year due to COVID-19, Tamworth Regional Council will be marking the day in the following ways:

  • There have been two wreaths made; the Mayor Col Murray and the Deputy Mayor Phil Betts will lay them at memorials in Tamworth and Kootingal on Saturday.
  • Cr Murray has advised he will commemorate the day privately by standing on his patio at dawn and listening to commemorative services on the radio.
  • A social media post will be circulated on Facebook and Instagram, on ANZAC Day, of Cr Murray saying The Ode with the hashtag #ANZACSpirit.
  • ANZAC Day is a tradition that is close to Cr Murray’s heart with his father a veteran of World War II and his uncle also a casualty of WWII.
  • Cr Murray will join Tracy Hicks, the mayor of Tamworth’s sister city in New Zealand’s south island, Gore, in a live broadcast on 88.9fm at 11.30am on Friday, 24 April 2020.
  • Council encourages the community to support contactless initiatives including those suggested by RSL NSW:
    • Doing a social media recording of The Ode or sharing a message of support for veterans using the hashtag #ANZACSpirit
    • Reaching out to someone who is alone during this isolating time.
    • Light up the dawn – standing at the end of your driveway or balcony and listen to commemorative services
