Appeal following spate of deliberate fires: Strike Force Biraban – Murray River

Police are appealing for information from the public as they continue to investigate a spate of fires in the state’s south last month.

Between 2.20pm and 5.20pm on Sunday 5 March 2023, emergency services attended four fires all within several hundred metres of each other on Mitchell Road, Burma Road, Bowna Waters Road and Davey Road, Table Top.

The blazes were all quickly extinguished by members of the Rural Fire Service before spreading.

Officers attached to Murray River Police District established Strike Force Biraban to investigate the fires, which are believed to have been deliberately lit.

Strike Force investigators are also conducting inquiries into two additional fires which are believed to be linked.

On Saturday 18 and Monday 20 March 2023, emergency services were called to Elizabeth Mitchell Drive, Thurgoona, following reports a farm shed was on fire.

Fire and Rescue NSW attended on each occasion and extinguished the blazes, which prevented it from spreading to nearby grassland. The shed sustained minimal damage.

All fires are being treated as suspicious and are believed to be linked.

As investigations under Strike Force Biraban continue, police urge anyone with information – including witnesses, or those with CCTV or dashcam footage – to contact Albury Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Anyone with information about that may assist Strike Force Biraban investigators is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report information via NSW Police social media pages.
