Police are appealing for information after an off-duty police officer was assaulted in the Sydney CBD this week.

About 7pm last Tuesday (23 February 2021), the officer was inside a supermarket on Quay Street, Haymarket, when he was assaulted by a man whilst attempting to make an off-duty arrest.

The officer observed the man exit the supermarket with several items which he had not paid for.

The off-duty sergeant advised staff on what had occurred where they challenged the male who ignored them.

When outside the store the sergeant approached the male and announced his office stating he was under arrest for shoplifting. A struggle ensued where the male allegedly assaulted the sergeant before fleeing the scene.

The sergeant suffered minor injuries.

Officers from the Sydney City Police Area Command attended and commenced an investigation.

As police continue their inquiries, they have released CCTV images of a man who may be able to assist with their inquiries.

The man is described as Caucasian appearance, 30 to 35 years old, 180cm tall and thin build.

He was wearing dark black hoodie, dark coloured long pants, blue sneakers and a black backpack.
