Police are appealing for information into the disappearance of Peter Collier, as part of this year’s ‘Answers Still Matter’ Missing Persons Week.
Peter Collier, aged 95, was last seen on Laidlaw Street in Yass on Sunday 7 June 2009.
He lived in remote locations and would write letters to family annually. But after years of not hearing from him, he was reported missing on Thursday 31 October 2024.
Peter – who was 78 at the time of his disappearance – is described as being of Caucasian appearance, 175cm tall, thin build with grey hair and blue eyes.
Peter’s sister, Violet Carrapetta said Peter was a quiet man, who preferred a transient and secluded life in bushland.
“Peter lived a quiet, private life, but he was still our brother – someone we loved deeply. Not knowing what happened to him has left a hole in our family that time hasn’t been able to fill,” Violet said.
“He spent a considerable amount of his time in remote parts of regional NSW and Victoria, traveling primarily on foot. He’s always in our thoughts, and the silence around his disappearance has been incredibly hard for our family.”
“If anyone remembers seeing Peter, even briefly, please come forward. We just want to understand what happened and bring some peace to our family.”
Missing Persons Week is an annual national campaign to raise awareness of the issues and impacts surrounding missing persons and runs between Sunday 2 August and Saturday 8 August 2026.
This year’s ‘Answers Still Matter’ campaign highlights the unwavering commitment of investigators to uncovering the truth for families seeking closure and communities wanting clarity.
Detective Inspector Paul Fenwick, Missing Persons Registry, said Peter’s family deserve answers.
“Peter Collier has been missing for many years, and our commitment to establishing what happened to him has not diminished. We continue to review information, revisit his known movements, and appeal to anyone who may recall seeing him,” Det Insp Paul Fenwick.
“Someone may have seen him without realising the significance at the time. Even a small recollection could help us understand his movements and progress this investigation.
“For his family, the uncertainty has lasted far too long. Answers still matter, and we are urging anyone with information to come forward so we can help provide the clarity they deserve.”
