Community-owned organisations can now apply for funding to establish a Regional University Centre (RUC) in regional or remote Australia.
Up to $14.8 million is available to successful applicants for proposals that support local access to university and other tertiary education and training.
Minister for Regionalisation, Regional Communications and Regional Education, Senator the Hon Bridget McKenzie, said RUCs play an important role in advancing tertiary education aspiration.
“The RUC program is a key part of the Liberal and Nationals Government’s commitment to improving tertiary education outcomes and opportunities for regional and remote Australians,” Minister McKenzie said.
“Regional University Centres provide study spaces, video conferencing, computer facilities and internet access, as well as academic and wellbeing support for students studying via distance at any Australian university or vocational education and training provider.
“They also contribute to regional workforce development, providing critical support and facilities so that students can study without having to leave home and relocate to a major metropolitan centre.
“All Australians should have access to the best education available, irrespective of where they live, and these centres are helping to make that possible for thousands of students across Australia.”
Since 2018, the Australian Government has announced $74.2 million to fund 26 Regional University Centres in all states and the Northern Territory.
The centres are supporting than 2,400 students to study a tertiary course while remaining in their own community in regional and remote Australia.
Applications for the third round of the Regional University Centres program close on 25 March and will be assessed on a competitive basis.
