Appointment of economic development Manager is a welcome development for Highlands

The Illawarra Business Chamber (IBC) has today welcomed Wingecarribee Shire Council’s renewed emphasis on economic development in the region, following the appointment of Mr Steve Rosa as Council’s new Group Manager of Tourism and Economic Development.

The IBC has been calling on Council to place a greater emphasis on proactive economic development, and this appointment is a positive step towards achieving that ambition.

“I welcome the appointment of Steve Rosa, who will now oversee tourism and economic development. Steve is a highly respected and effective advocate for our region. We are confident in the renewed approach he will no doubt bring to the role,” said Adam Zarth, Executive Director of the IBC.

Under the leadership of Mr Rosa, Destination Southern Highlands has taken the region’s destination marketing from strength to strength. As recently as last week, Destination Southern Highlands won a QANTAS Australia Tourism Awards for Destination Marketing.

“We also welcome the commitment of Wingecarribee Mayor, Councillor Duncan Gair, to work with local and regional industry bodies, like ours. The planned appointment of separate coordinators for Tourism and Economic Development are also a good outcome, and we look forward to seeing the results of their work.”

“As we recently indicated to Council, businesses and industry are keen to work with them in facilitating the greater development of tourism and the wider economy in the Highlands.”

“The business community will work with Mr Rosa to re-establish an independent Economic Development and Tourism Advisory Committee and on proactive, forward-looking economic policies, which we expect should include Economic Development and Rural Tourism Development Plans that are informed by the sector.”
