Appointment of Murray Furlong as General Manager of Fair Work Commission

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Murray Furlong as General Manager of the Fair Work Commission.

The Commission has a number of functions, including in relation to the National Employment Standards, modern awards, enterprise agreements, workplace determinations, minimum wages and unfair dismissal.

The General Manager assists the President of the Commission, the Hon Justice Iain Ross AO, in ensuring that the Commission performs its functions and exercises its powers.

Mr Furlong has a strong commitment to continuing to improve the services the Fair Work Commission provides to the Australian community by better understanding and responding to the changing needs of employers, employees and their representatives.

I congratulate Mr Furlong on his appointment.

Biography

Mr Furlong has been acting General Manager since 6 April 2021, following the resignation of Ms Bernadette O’Neill to take up a position as a Commissioner on the Commission.

Mr Furlong has nine years’ experience as an Executive Director at the Commission. He has also been an Executive Director at the Australian Building and Construction Commission and the Office of the Fair Work Ombudsman.

Mr Furlong has advanced qualifications in management from Harvard University and holds a master’s degree in public administration from the Australian and New Zealand School of Government at the University of Melbourne.
