Architecture Without Architects: Loose Fit Now Open at the Melbourne School of Design

A new exhibition showcases how communities across East Asia are reimagining architecture through collaboration, adaptability and local knowledge

The University of Melbourne’s Melbourne School of Design is proud to present Loose Fit: Provisional and Participatory Practices from East Asia, a major exhibition that is now open and challenging conventional ideas about how architecture is conceived, designed and built.

Bringing together innovative projects from across East Asia, Loose Fit explores forms of architecture that emerge without a singular “master architect”. Instead, the exhibition showcases work shaped by professional and non-professional designers, builders, communities and local stakeholders working collaboratively to improve the built environment.

At a time when cities and communities face mounting challenges from climate change, resource scarcity and population displacement, Loose Fit offers a compelling alternative vision for architecture. The projects featured demonstrate how collective participation, sensitivity to local conditions and resourceful approaches to materials and labour can create more adaptable, resilient and sustainable places.

The exhibition highlights a growing movement across East Asia that is redefining the role of the architect, prioritising process, participation and flexibility over fixed outcomes. Through a diverse range of case studies, visitors are invited to consider architecture not as a finished object, but as an ongoing and shared journey.

“Loose Fit shows us a different way of doing architecture,” said the exhibition’s curatorial team. “By drawing on local knowledge, local materials and local aspirations, the projects in this exhibition demonstrate how architecture can be responsive, inclusive and deeply connected to place.”

Among the exhibition highlights is a striking tea house installation, assembled with the support of Melbourne School of Design students, showcasing the hands-on and collaborative spirit that underpins many of the featured projects.

The exhibition has been curated by Nancy Ji, Dijia Chen and Alex Seo, and features projects from leading practitioners across East Asia, including Professor Hiroto Kobayashi and Dr Rafael Luna.

The exhibition is supported by Austrayply, SaveBOARD and Toshiba International and delivered by the Melbourne School of Design’s exhibitions team.
