Arrest – Disturbances – Victoria River Region

Northern Territory Police are continuing investigations after multiple large disturbances were reported in the Victoria River Region over the weekend.

Over the course of Friday night and into Saturday morning, police received numerous calls of disturbances in the community of Wadeye.

The reports included instances of fighting, criminal damage, arson and stolen vehicles.

The Wadeye police compound was breached by offenders cutting the perimeter fence. Once inside, two non-police vehicles were damaged.

Local members, supported by Adelaide River, Peppimentari and Daly River police deployed and an investigation into the incidents remains ongoing.

Five males have been arrested, 4 adults and one youth, in relation to the offending. All have been charged with Engage in violent conduct and remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court today.

Police road blocks were in place around the Victoria River Region on Friday night with a significant number of home-made weapons including spears and edged weapons later surrendered to police.

Acting Superintendent Erica Gibson said “Local police have done a fantastic job seizing illicit substances and weapons before they could be brought into the community to further exacerbate tensions in the region.

“Our members are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of the community and we thank those who provided vital information for our investigations.

“Thankfully, we have received no reports of serious injuries and police will continue to work with Elders, Traditional Owners and the community to ensure that calm is maintained.”
