Arrest – Illicit substance seizure – Gapuwiyak

Northern Territory Police have seized a large quantity of illicit substance in Gapuwiyak community earlier this week.

On Monday 4 November, local police conducted a search on a residence in the community and uncovered a large quantity of kava for the purpose of supplying in the community.

The kava was allegedly prepared and packaged into smaller quantities in preparation for quick distribution. Police also seized a large amount of cash believed to be in relation to the sale of the kava.

A 55-year-old man from Sydney has been arrested and charged with:

  • Supply Kava – Commercial quantity.
  • Possess Kava – Commercial quantity.

He appeared in court on 7 November 2024

Constable Jake Kakies said, “This result is a great example of how collaborative work between local police and community members allows police to identify alleged offending and enable them to act swiftly.

“Gapuwiyak Police will continue to target those who seek to gain benefit from the distribution of illicit substances in our remote communities and ensure that offenders are held fully accountable for their actions.

“The supply of illicit substances into remote communities has devastating impacts on the lives of people in vulnerable communities.”
