Arrests made after protest action at Smithton

Four people have been arrested following a protest at the Ta Ann Veneer Mill at Smithton this morning.

Police were called to the scene shortly before 9am, after a group of about 20 protesters arrived at the mill.

The majority of protesters complied with police directions to move on, however four people were arrested for trespass after attaching themselves to machinery and other equipment and refusing to leave.

“Search and rescue personnel have been dispatched to the scene to remove the people from the equipment,” said Senior Sergeant Tony Stewart.

“Tasmania Police appreciates that people have the democratic right to protest, however this sort of action diverts key resources away from other areas.”
