Attempted murder charge at Cairns

Cairns detectives have charged a man with attempted murder following an alleged assault in Cairns this morning.

At around 11:00am a man entered a hostel on Bunda Street before approaching a woman in the communal area.

Police will allege the man then inappropriately touched the 26-year-old woman without her consent.

It will be further alleged when the woman called for help the man assaulted her, before taking a knife from a kitchen and stabbing her in the neck and arm as she tried to flee.

The man then fled area but was taken into custody by officers on Quigley Street at around 12:00pm.

The 26-year-old woman was transported to Cairns Base Hospital in a serious condition for treatment of stab wounds to her neck and arm.

A 36-year-old Wellesley Islands man has been charged with one count each of attempted murder, sexual assault and assault occasioning bodily harm.

He is due to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court tomorrow.
