Aurora’s House – teaching children driveway safety

  • Road Safety Commission partners with Constable Care to deliver road safety education
  • Aurora’s House – teaching children lifelong safety skills when in or around driveways
  • Road Safety Minister Paul Papalia today opened Aurora’s House – a new safety experience designed to teach young children about driveway safety.

Based at the Constable Care Child Safety School in Maylands, Aurora’s House has been established in memory of Aurora Ellis, who was killed when she was struck by a reversing vehicle in the driveway of her family home.

Tragically, an average of seven children die each year after being accidentally run over in Australian driveways.

Aurora’s House incorporates augmented reality learning modules and is designed to teach children driveway safety, with a focus on reversing vehicles.

The initiative has been made possible through a $135,000 partnership between the Road Safety Commission and the Constable Care Foundation, to deliver road safety education programs.

The Maylands Safety School provides a realistic layout of Perth’s streets, giving students a hands-on opportunity to learn vital pedestrian, bicycle and public transport travel and driveway safety skills.

As stated by Police and Road Safety Minister Paul Papalia:

“It is so important to instil safe road behaviours in children from a young age, so they have the best foundation to then build upon as they become more involved with WA’s roads.

“Education plays a vital role as we work to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on Western Australian roads.

“Aurora’s House will provide a lasting legacy for Aurora Ellis by providing children with lifelong safety skills when in or around driveways and reversing vehicles.

“I’d like to thank and congratulate the Member for Maylands Lisa Baker for her commitment and dedication in seeing this project through.”

As stated by Maylands MLA Lisa Baker:

“This was a project I committed to at the last State election and I’m so pleased to be delivering on behalf of the community.

“The Constable Care Safety School delivers such valuable programs for our young people and from Term 4, they will now have access to Aurora’s House – teaching children lifelong safety skills around driveways and footpaths.”
