Residents are encouraged to nominate the people, groups and events that make Griffith a vibrant and connected community, with nominations now open for the Australia Day Awards.
Following the recent adoption of Council’s updated Australia Day Policy, two new award categories have been added to recognise the significant contribution of arts, culture and creativity across the Griffith community.
The new categories are the Arts and Cultural Contribution Award and Arts and Cultural Event of the Year, providing new opportunities to celebrate local artists, performers, cultural groups, festivals, heritage projects and creative initiatives.
Griffith Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran said the new categories would ensure the valuable contributions of the arts and cultural sector are recognised alongside the many other achievements celebrated through the Australia Day Awards.
“Our community is home to an incredible range of artists, performers, cultural organisations and events that enrich our lives, bring people together and help make Griffith a vibrant place to live,” Councillor Curran said.
“These new award categories acknowledge the important role arts and culture play in shaping our community identity and creating opportunities for people to connect, participate and celebrate.”
Mayor Curran encouraged residents to take the opportunity to recognise those who make a positive difference in the community.
“The Australia Day Awards are a chance to celebrate the individuals, organisations and events that help make Griffith a special place,” he said.
“Whether it’s through volunteering, community service, sport, environmental initiatives, business, the arts or cultural activities, there are so many deserving people and groups whose efforts deserve recognition.
“Every year, following the awards ceremony, I have residents approach me and tell me about someone they should have nominated, don’t let that happen this year. Get your nominations in early, don’t wait until the last minute and forget.”

Nominations for the Griffith Australia Day Awards are now open and close on Friday, 20 November 2026.
