The City’s annual Australia Day celebrations at Broadwater Parkland have been altered this year, with a series of smaller scale events planned given challenges associated with Covid-19.
Mayor Tom Tate said it was impractical to safely go ahead with the event, which normally attracts thousands of Gold Coasters each year.
“While we’d love to have everyone come together for Australia Day, we want to ensure everyone stays safe in 2021.
“Instead we’ll be celebrating all things Australiana with our themed Movies Under the Stars Summer Series for the entire week leading up to Australia Day.
“We’ll be going to Bonnie Doon with classics such as The Castle and making life as good as an Abba song with Muriel’s Wedding.
“We’ll still be going ahead with our Aquatic Centre Australia Day Pool Party however it will be on a smaller scale compared to previous years’ events,” he said.
Normal pool entry fees apply for the Australia Day Pool Party. Movies Under the Stars events are free however bookings are necessary via cityofgoldcoast.com.au/moviesunderthestars
The City will also be hosting a Covid-safe Australian citizenship ceremony on Tuesday 26 January, welcoming around 50 new Australians to the city.
