Australia Day nominations to open November 1

Nominations will open on November 1 for the 2024 Southern Grampians Shire Council Australia Day Awards.

Each year, these distinguished awards celebrate hard working individuals and groups and recognise their achievements across the Southern Grampians Shire.

Mayor Councillor David Robertson encouraged locals to now think about nominations.

“There are so many people who have made a difference in our community during the past 12 months,” said Cr Robertson.

“From one-off achievements to long-term efforts, we want to officially recognise notable initiatives, achievements, and contributions.

“Whether it’s a friend, family member or someone from your work or club, I encourage you to put pen to paper and nominate them for an Australia Day award. Not only will they be celebrated by their community, it will be a memory they will treasure forever.”

The Southern Grampians Shire Council 2023 Australia Day Awards will include four categories:

– Young Citizen of the Year – for residents aged under 25 in the shire who have made a significant contribution to the community in the current year, or over a number of years.

– Citizen of the Year – for residents aged over 25 in the shire who have made a significant contribution to the community in the current year, or over a number of years.

– Community Event of the Year – to a group or person in the shire who has staged the most outstanding community event between October 30, 2022 and October 30, 2023 including single day, multiple day and virtual events.

– Community Recognition for an individual or group in the shire who has made a significant contribution to the local community in the current year or over a number of years.

Recipient of the awards will be announced at council’s official Australia Day celebrations at the Hamilton Botanic Gardens on January 26, 2024.

Nominations close Friday 1 December at 5pm.
