Twelve outstanding local crime and violence prevention programs from across Australia are today being recognised in an awards ceremony coordinated by the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC).
The annual Australian Crime and Violence Prevention Awards recognise the outstanding contributions local groups can make to preventing and reducing violence and crime in our communities.
Minister for Home Affairs Karen Andrews said the Morrison Government would always provide our police and law enforcement agencies with the resources, powers, and funding they need, but that local solutions were often the best way to deal with local issues.
“The programs recognised today are making a real difference in their local areas, improving the lives of victims and offenders” Minister Andrews said.
“Among this year’s project winners we have programs that are decreasing family violence, helping offenders meet court appearance requirements, tackling on-and off-field violence in sport, reducing knife crime, preventing sexual harm to children, and reducing the overrepresentation of Indigenous youth in the criminal justice system.”
“They all play an important role reducing crime and violence, and each demonstrates some truly creative approaches. Those receiving awards should be proud to know their hard work is valued and inspiring.”
From a total of 40 nominations, 12 programs and projects received awards in 2021.
Community-led project winners 2021:
- Gold: Dardi Munwurro’s Ngarra Jarranounith Place (Vic)
- Silver: Crime Stoppers Western Australia’s Bikelinc (WA)
- Silver: Department for Correctional Services South Australia’s Intensive Bail Supervision program for Domestic and Family Violence (SA)
- Silver: Sammy D Foundation’s Don’t Let It Be Game Over Violence Prevention Program (SA)
- Bronze: Body Safety Superstars (Vic)
- Bronze: Bravehearts Foundation Limited’s Turning Corners (Qld)
Police-led project winners 2021:
- Gold: Queensland Police Service’s Project Kairos Queensland Gangs Exit Program (Qld)
- Silver: New South Wales Police Force’s Project Walwaay (NSW)
- Silver: Tasmania Police’s Project Vigilance (Tas)
- Bronze: Queensland Police Service’s I live my life without a knife”, knife crime prevention campaign (Qld)
- Bronze: Victoria Police’s Vehicle Crime Squad – Second-Hand Dealer Inspection and Closure Program (Vic)
- Bronze: Western Australia Police Force’s Tom Price Youth Action Plan (WA)
