“The Australian Republic Movement wishes the Matildas the very best of endeavours in their quest to win the FIFA Women’s World Cup on home soil.
The team represents the best of Australian capability, courage and ambition and the nation takes immense pride in them, as all of our sporting ambassadors that help to create moments that bring us all together, demonstrate the wonderful diversity that defines Australia and particularly the rise of Australian women’s sport, and women across society.
Equality is a fundamental value of Australian life and the ARM is thrilled to see the marvellous Matildas take on the world while standing as true equals to the Socceroos.
As two former champion athletes, it fills us with great pride to see the many cultures of Australia on the field, side by side, representing our beautiful, multicultural demography along with First Nations athletes and leaders, Kyah Simon and Lydia Williams, who represent our ancient heritage.
The one glaring omission is an international representative who is Australian, chosen to represent all of us and to welcome the dignitaries of the world who will arrive to support their National Teams.
We will see many Heads of State at the tournament, since their role is to support and cheer their teams and use the opportunity to advocate for their country’s aspirations.
Australia’s Head of State will be supporting another favourite for the title, England.
We think that’s no longer suitable for Australia in 2023.
We are sending our well wishes to our friends in New Zealand following the horrific events of this morning, the families affected and the teams preparing to begin competition.
And are sending our warmest affection to every athlete, team and country for an outstanding tournament and that all our international visitors have an opportunity to experience the unmatched diversity and richness of Australian life, it’s warm and welcoming people and renowned natural gifts and unique flora and fauna.
