Powerful images captured by amateur and professional photographers from around Australia have been selected as finalists for one of the country’s biggest photo competitions.
Selected from more than 2,400 entries, 20 images for the Australian Life photography competition depict the spirit, diversity and resilience of modern Australia.
The finalist images cover everything from cultural connections, everyday people and passions to random encounters, beaches and tragedy.
Sydney Square, beside Sydney Town Hall on George Street, will be transformed into a free, outdoor exhibition showcasing the finalist images from 25 September to 11 October.
“For 24 years, Australian Life has been a platform for photographers across the country to share compelling visual stories that capture the unique character of our country and its people,” Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore AO said.
“We open Australian Life to photographers of all backgrounds and experience levels, making it one of the country’s most inclusive photography prizes.
“These finalist images reveal moments that are deeply personal, uniquely Australian and universally relatable.
“Together, they create an exhibition that portrays the people, places and experiences that shape Australia’s identity.”
Finalists were selected by a distinguished panel comprising award-winning photojournalist and visuals editor at The Guardian Australia Carly Earl, acclaimed film and television producer Melissa Azizi, and Yorta Yorta photographer and photojournalist Joseph Mayers.
The winner of the competition will be announced at the opening of the exhibition and will receive a $10,000 cash prize. Visitors to the exhibition can vote for their favourite image. The People’s Choice Award will be announced on 9 October and the winner will receive an OM SYSTEM camera package valued at $5,300.
