Australians support new fuel efficiency standards

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

We’re acting on strong community support for a new Fuel Efficiency Standard (FES) for cars.

1,200 submissions from individuals and organisations show the majority want a FES.

Most developed countries have introduced a FES. Australia will soon catch up, which will give us better access to cleaner cars.

The new FES will boost access to cheaper-to-run cars and improve the air we breathe.

The new FES will:

  • save Australians money
  • unlock greater choice of modern, safer and cleaner cars
  • help us achieve our emissions reduction target of 43% below 2005 levels by 2030.

It means motorists will have improved choice of more efficient light vehicles. Providing choice was part of the National Electric Vehicle Strategy.

The FES consultation submissions are now informing an impact analysis. The Australian Government will release the new draft FES by the end of 2023.

The FES will only apply to new vehicles sold in Australia.
