Back On Track, Silverdome Upgrades Progress

Tasmanian Government

Nick Duigan, Minister for Sport

Riders officially return to the Silverdome velodrome today following the delivery of a significant refurbishment that will support cycling in Tasmania for decades to come.

Minister for Sport, Nick Duigan, said Back on Track at the Silverdome celebrates the reopening of the velodrome following specialist repairs, delivered as part of the broader $12 million Silverdome redevelopment.

“The refurbishment is an important milestone for the cycling community and the long-term future of the venue,” Minister Duigan said.

“The track refurbishment included full-track sanding and resurfacing works, track modifications and the installation of a new track insert.

“Today’s reopening celebrates the successful completion of works that will ensure the Silverdome velodrome continues to support cyclists, clubs and athletes for decades to come.

“Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future is delivering the sporting infrastructure our communities need to stay active, pursue their goals and achieve sporting success.

“Tasmania has punched above its weight in producing world-class cyclists and we want to continue to support talented Tasmanian cyclists to train, compete and pursue their sporting ambitions.

“Investing in facilities like the Silverdome helps make that possible right here at home.”

Adding to the significance of the occasion, Tasmanian cycling great Michael Grenda OAM, who completed the ceremonial opening ride when the velodrome first opened in 1985, will return as part of the reopening celebrations.

“It is fitting that Michael Grenda, one of Tasmania’s greatest sporting champions and first Olympic gold medallist, will once again be part of opening the track,” Minister Duigan said.

David Large, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Stadiums Tasmania said the reopening represented an exciting new chapter for cycling at the Silverdome.

“The velodrome is one of the Silverdome’s most unique and valued sporting assets, and we’re delighted to welcome the cycling community back to the track,” Mr Large said.

“Today’s celebration is not only about the track itself. It’s about recognising the clubs, volunteers, athletes and supporters who have helped build Tasmania’s cycling community.

“Without them, today would not be possible and we thank them for their involvement in bringing this celebration to life.”

The Silverdome redevelopment includes upgraded seating, athlete facilities, new hospitality offerings, greater accessibility and state-of-the-art technology to deliver an improved fan experience. The track works were delivered by specialist contractor Velotrack.
